Her Moves: Emma Whelan's Story
"I had taken a break from physical exercise and recently started back rock climbing. On my return, I realised how happy I was to be back and active!" -Emma Whelan
Emma Whelan is a 17-year-old, 6th year student. Emma got involved in sport from a young age and has a number of different hobbies including, rock-climbing, scouts, soccer, and swimming. We spoke with Emma last week and asked her a few questions about her relationship with sport and activity and her story so far.
How has sport and physical activity impacted your life?
I can appreciate the benefits of sport because I had taken a break from physical exercise and recently started back rock climbing. On my return, I realised how happy I was to be back and active!
Who inspires you to be active?
My inspiration is the Irish Ladies football team captain, Katie McCabe. She is an amazing role model for young boys and girls. In a recent interview she said ‘’consistency and passion will get you to the top, no matter what sport you do’’ which completely resonates with me!
What does your school do to encourage an active environment?
My school encourages all sport in many different ways. For example, they host a large sports day and everybody is included. The teachers organise a game of rounders against the 6th years and they usually do it in a fancy dress, which is very amusing to watch. There is great excitement and competitiveness on the day.
Who has been your most influential coach and why?
I find when you’re learning a new skill or sport, coaches are so important. All of my coaches have encouraged me, supported me and believe in me.
Have you noticed other girls your age stepping away from sport? If so, how does that make you feel?
One of my close friends in scouts didn’t attend the weekly meeting but had booked in for the end of year summer camp, and I had noticed that she was feeling a bit left out when we were away. I saw how hard it was for her to settle back into the group that it made me realise that it is hard for people to rejoin the group after been away for a bit.
What’s your advice to someone thinking about dropping out of sport?
If I could give any advice to anyone thinking of leaving is to talk to their coaches and their parents to see if this is the best decision for them.
Is there any advice you have for parents trying to support their daughter participating in sport?
For any parents meeting the challenge of their daughter looking to leave a sport, I would talk to them and try and help them find another sport or activity they are interested in.
Have you any advice for someone thinking of getting involved in sport or physical activity?
I feel that a huge benefit being involved in a sport/physical activity is meeting new people, sharing the same interests, getting fit, and being happy.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself?
I was the first ever family member to be interviewed on TV.
