Killarney Basketball launched a 6-week pilot programme to create a dedicated hub for teenage girls, encouraging them to embrace physical activity through basketball. Established with the invaluable support of Basketball Ireland through the Her Moves initiative.
Following the resounding success of the Killarney Basketball Programme initial pilot, they are proud to announce ongoing weekly sessions for teenage girls. The programme is on every Tuesday at 6 pm in St Mary's Parish Hall Killarney until March.
Killarney Basketball Club is dedicated to promoting physical activity, empowerment, and developing connections among teenage girls. Building on the triumph of the teenage girls' sessions, the club has expand edits offerings to include a women's session. This expansion reinforces our commitment to continue enhancing physical and mental well-being for women and teenage girls through basketball in Killarney.
Perspective from a Coach:
“In my role as a coach for women and teenage girls within Killarney Basketball, I find immense satisfaction in witnessing the impact the sessions have on participants. It's particularly gratifying to see individuals rediscover their passion for the sport, especially those who had previously disengaged due to a lack of enjoyment. The program provides an environment free from external pressures, allowing girls and women to immerse themselves in the joy of basketball. I have found there has been a load of teenage girls interested but all a bit worried about coming in for the first time especially if they don't know anyone but the girls who have made that hard step to come in are loving every second and have been asking for more sessions each week. We have a very welcoming group and environment and as a coach I love the sessions. “
Participant Testimonial:
“My Experience doing this Her Moves program was very enjoyable. I found it was a very easygoing and friendly environment. From the start of the program there was a very easy feeling that it didn't matter whether you played basketball before or if you never picked up a basketball. The experience of being able to go to a session a week and just have fun and talk to other girls I had never met before but became great friends with was something that made the program the most enjoyable. The skills I learned from the program have stood to me and overall helped me and my playing. I would highly recommend this program to every girl whether they played basketball or never had to do one of these programs. The coaches were very funny and friendly and made sure that every person who came to the program felt welcomed and had fun and learned something new by the end of it.”
Killarney Basketball Club stands proud as an advocate for empowerment, physical activity, skill development, and building an inclusive environment for teenage girls and women. Sessions are every Tuesday at St Mary's Parish Hall Killarney, where the teenage girls' session commences at 6 pm, followed by the women's session at 7 pm.
